The Bruckner Foundation for the promotion of ceramic arts
Fondation - texte en français »
Mrs Charlotte Bruckner left a legacy to the City of Carouge (Geneva, Switzerland) to support cultural activities. The City decided to devote this donation to the promotion of the arts of ceramics and instituted a foundation.
The aim of the Bruckner Foundation is to foster artistic creativity in ceramics and to encourage public contact with it. The Foundation seeks to develop structures to intensify the presence of ceramics in Carouge. The Bruckner Foundation supports the young generation of ceramists in granting, once a year, an award to two ceramist students graduating from Swiss schools of applied arts (Geneva, Vevey, Bern).
The scholarship consists of a three months residency at the Foundation’s studios, a firing in its 1000l gaz kiln, and the opportunity to exhibit at the annual collective exhibition.
The Foundation manages its studios’ activities and, since 2010 organizes the Parcours Céramique Carougeois, taking place every second year. The Bruckner’s regular program offers workshops, artist lectures, demonstrations and an annual collective exhibition, as well as other events contributing to the public’s awareness of ceramic worlds. Furthermore, a studio flat located near the studios and close to the centre is available for visiting artists.
The Bruckner Foundation’s contribution to creativity enhances the public’s perception of ceramic arts and helps to develop new exchanges. Its action increases contemporary ceramics’ public in allowing its creators to express themselves and expose their art.
Carouge was founded near Geneva at the end of 18th century by the Maison de Savoie. An important factory of ceramics developed from 1803 to 1933. Since then, numerous ceramists installed their workshops in Carouge where art and crafts are still very lively. Since 1987, an international competition of ceramic arts takes place every second year assorted (since 1989) with the Parcours Céramique Carougeois, a wandering through Carouge’s galleries and artist workshops, presenting on this occasion the work of as much as fifty ceramists.
